SHIRLEY J. SMITH, MONTICELLO – Shirley J. Smith, 79 of Monticello, passed away surrounded by his family on September 21, 2018. He was born to Ralph and Eva (Anderson) Smith of Hodgdon March 2, 1939.
A woodsman from the young age of 13, he was a skilled pulp cutter and loved working alongside his father, brothers, and nephews.
Shirley loved to hunt, fish, pick fiddleheads, and boil syrup in his sugar shack. A good night of coon hunting was among his favorite past-times. He loved to go four-wheeling and sledding with family and friends. He enjoyed a good poker night or lively family game of Scat.
Shirley credits his friend and brother-in-law, Lawrence Tingley for introducing him to his true love, Dorothea (Dodie) Tingley, who he married on July 30, 1960. Together, they raised six children and shared a special love for all of their 58 married years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his siblings, Laurence Smith, Claire Smith, Leta Bouchard, Ervin Smith, and Sandy Lake. He was father to Brian and wife, Sandy; Leslie and wife, Caroline; Nancy Briggs and, husband Peter; Ronnie and wife, Jessie; Betty Sprague and, husband Kelley; Tony and partner, Becky Wood; and a special sister-in-law, Connie Tingley Graham has been a constant source of love and support over the years.
He was especially close to his nephews, Dennis Smith and Kent Smith, but lucky to have relationships with many of his nephews and nieces.
He answered to Grampie, Gramp, Grandpa, and Puppa to his 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and he had a special bond with granddaughter, Lisa Briggs Forbush and grandson, Justin Smith.
He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Joyce Smith Craig.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, September 29, 2018, 10 a.m. with a brief service to follow at 11 a.m. at Bowers Funeral Home, located at 10 Water Street, Houlton, ME.
