PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The North Atlantic Conference recognized a pair of athletes from the University of Maine at Presque Isle for their efforts during the week ending Sept. 23.
Devine Hoskie of the women’s volleyball team was named Player of the Week and Valentine Degiovanni of the women’s cross country team gained Rookie of the Week honors.
Hoskie, a junior from Shonto, Arizona, recorded 12 kills, 13 aces and 13 digs in a four-set triumph over Castleton on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Owls also beat Green Mountain College and Unity Sunday by scores of 3-0 and lost to the University of Southern Maine by the same score Saturday. Hoskie totaled 37 kills, 21 aces and 35 digs in the four matches.
The Owls will play Colby College in Waterville Friday and two more Saturday at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts.
Degiovanni, a freshman from Nice, France, won her third Rookie of the Week honor after leading UMPI and placing 19th overall at the Pop Crowell Invitational, hosted by Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, Saturday. She had a time of 25 minutes on the six-kilometer course. The Owls finished 10th out of 16 teams.
The Owl men’s team came in 12th out of 17 teams, with runners competing on an 8K course. Both the men and the women will appear in the Maine State Championships Saturday at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.
The golf team was at Waterville Country Club for the UM-Farmington Invitational Saturday, Sept. 22. Junior Michael Boone of Presque Isle led the Owls, who placed 10th, with a 91. The team is back in action this weekend at the UM-Augusta Invitational.
The UMPI men’s soccer team lost a close game to Northern Vermont-Lyndon Saturday, 4-3, before bouncing back Sunday for a 7-1 victory over UM-Machias. Both were road matches. Chris Udobi (three goals in the two games) and Andre Rossignol (two goals) had strong individual outings for the Owls. They take a 4-5 record into home matches Saturday against SUNY-Canton and Sunday against Fisher College.
The women’s soccer team is still looking for its first win after a 2-0 loss to Northern Vermont-Lyndon and an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Fisher College. Senior striker Jordi Legassie of Presque Isle continued her fine play and had the Owls’ only goal on the weekend. The 0-6 Owls, coached by Keli Marston, host SUNY-Canton Saturday and play a rematch against Fisher, also at home, Sunday.
