LINCOLN, Maine — The Houlton golf team captured the Penobscot Valley Conference Class C championship Thursday at the JaTo Highlands Golf Course.
“It was a day with a lot of highs and lows, but that is golf,” coach Dave Grant said.
The Shires team score of 350 was a bit higher than scores from other meets this season, but was still good enough to see the team qualify for the state Class C competition to be held Saturday, Oct. 6, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.
Others qualifying on the day were Orono, 372; Mattanawcook Academy, 387; and George Stevens Academy, 408.
Last year, the Shires finished as runners-up to both the PVC championship and Class C state title.
Four members of the squad — Wyatt Harvey, Isaac Vega, Colin Moody and Nick Brewer qualified for the boys individual state competition, to be played Oct. 13 at Natanis. Vega fired an 85 over 18 holes, while Harvey was one stroke behind at 86. Moody shot an 89, while Brewer finished with a 90. Duncan McCormick missed the state cut but still had a strong showing at 95.
For the girls team, Rhetta Vega missed out on qualifying for the state girls individual competition by just two strokes (102), while Sydney Lorom missed the cutoff by three strokes (103). Rhetta Vega, however, was named the PVC Class C girls Player of the Year.
The scores were a bit higher for all golfers due to the heavy rain that passed through the area on Wednesday, which made the course a bit tricky in places.
“Everyone played hard and gave it all,” Grant said. “It was just a tough day all around for everyone there. Only 16 golfers qualified for individuals out of 96 (total golfers).”
