Mars Hill news and notes

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Sept. 25 at the Aroostook Health Center.  The guest speaker was Josh Tweedie, owner of the local IGA stores.

He and his wife bought the Mars Hill IGA, Star City IGA and Hillside IGA stores 19 months ago and have worked hard to make the stores the best they can be.  Josh has a history with the Mars Hill IGA having worked there from 1994-’98 while in school.

Some changes they have made include changing all the lighting in the stores to LEDs which has cut down a lot on the electricity needed. They also attend food shows twice a year in order to keep up on new products.  They also will order special items in as requested.

He knows that their best asset is their help.  They have over 50 full-time employees, some having been with the store for over 40 years.  They also have many part-time employees with a big turnover on student workers due to school schedules.

They have had to stay very informed about the items affected by the tariff changes.  He noted that there actually aren’t that many items affected, only about 10 percent of things typically bought by Canadian customers.
