HOULTON, Maine — A Houlton High School senior has been lauded for his academics by the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Alex Wilde, the son of Traci Storti and Tim Wilde, was named a “Commended Student” in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Wilde qualified for the award based on his performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which he took during his junior year.
About 34,000 students nationwide are recognized for their exceptional academic promise, according to a press release from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Commended students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who took the 2017 PSATs.
“It says a lot about Alex and our school,” Houlton Middle-High School Principal Jim Hodgkin said. “It is exactly the direction we are trying to move toward at Houlton. We want to continue to encourage students to perform at the highest level of academics. This award is good for both Alex and our school because students can see we are a place where kids can get a quality education.”
Wilde said he has yet to decide on his post-secondary path. He is considering a degree in either engineering or business or possibly pursuing a career in law enforcement.
