101 Years Ago – September 27, 1917
Phone office improves — The Aroostook Tel. & Tel. Co. made quite extensive changes and improvements in its rooms in the Phair building. The business office on the first floor had been enlarged by adding to it the room in front vacated by the Western Union, and on the second floor a restroom for the young lady operators was being fitted up, three sections were being added to the switchboard, and the rooms were being painted and brightened up throughout.
75 Years Ago – October 7, 1943
Andrews is superintendent — Roland B. Andrews had been elected to the superintendency of the Presque Isle-Westfield Union, to succeed R. J. Carpenter that resigned, as announced by W. J. Mackin, of the School Board. The members of the superintending boards of this union stated that they were fortunate in being able to secure a superintendent with Mr. Andrews’ qualifications and experience.
50 Years Ago – September 25, 1968
Shoe company manager — R. A. Hull, Jr., vice president manufacturing of Viner Bros. Inc. of Bangor, announced the appointment of Keith Reynolds as general manager of Aroostook Shoe Co. in Presque Isle and in charge of the entire operation. Aroostook Shoe Co., a subsidiary of Viner Bros. Inc. of Bangor, manufactures women’s and children’s genuine handsewn moccasins and loafers at the Presque Isle Plant. He had retired as a Lt. commander from the U.S. Navy after 24 years service.
Commission post — A Presque Isle man, William E. Stephenson, was named assistant director, a newly created position, of the Northern Maine Regional Planning Commission. The appointment was advanced by James Barresi, executive director, and Alban Cyr, chairman of the commission. The new assistant director will assist Barresi in projects of the commission composed of some 70 communities in Aroostook and Penobscot counties. The commission was formed in 1966 through federal, state and local funding, primarily involved with the economic development of the area it serves and performs extensive research and planning assistance for regional projects of many local communities in that area.
25 Years Ago – October 6, 1993
Awarded — John Ginty of Presque Isle, personnel director for the Houlton Band of Maliseets, was awarded the Area Directors’ Equal Opportunity Advancement Award, given in Nashville, Tenn., by James C. Meredith, assistant surgeon general for Public Health Services. Ginty received a plaque for outstanding leadership and promotion of equal opportunity in governmental affairs.
Just a new name — The former Crisis Pregnancy Center of Aroostook changed its name to the Pregnancy Care Center of Aroostook, in tune with its mission of total care for expectant mothers.
