PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Wintergreen Arts Center is putting a new twist on its fourth annual CHAIR-ity event this year by expanding the genre of items to be repurposed.
From old pottery to funky doors to well-used furniture, along with traditional chairs of any style, local artisans are turning discarded objects into beautiful, artful collectibles.
All items will be on display at Wintergreen during the month of November. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2, during Presque Isle’s First Friday Downtown Art Walk.
In partnership with the Rotary Club of Presque Isle, all items will be sold online during the 2018 Rotary Auction. Proceeds will go to support scholarships for Wintergreen’s After School and Summer Arts Programs.
Artist Melanie Cyr’s work with stained glass is an example of what this year’s artists are creating. She discussed her piece “Through the Looking Glass” as a form of repurposed art.
“Creating stained glass has always been a slow-going process for me until my daughter started going to school full days,” said Cyr. “I found myself wandering around the house not sure what to do with my time. This piece came together really quickly with some found objects: an old barn-board frame given to me years ago, some leftover glass and lots of Band-Aids.”

To be included in the online Rotary Auction, all repurposed art needs to be delivered to Wintergreen by Oct. 19.
