CARIBOU, Maine — A 17-year-old is facing terrorizing charges after allegedly brandishing a BB gun Friday afternoon while riding in a vehicle near Caribou High School, which was briefly placed on lockdown, according to Caribou Police Chief Mark Gahagan.
A member of the public called the police to report someone brandishing what appeared to a be a gun near but not on the grounds of Caribou High School, Gahagan said.
As a precautionary measure the school was placed on lockdown at 2:38 p.m. by administrators and the school resource officer, Gahagan said. The lockdown, which typically involves students and staff hunkering down in place and all doors being locked, was lifted minutes later, he said.
Gahagan said that the resource officer, Kevin St. Peter, responded to the incident and found the individual with a BB gun in a vehicle on Sweden Street near the high school.
The 17-year-old carrying the BB gun was a passenger in a vehicle with two other occupants, Gahagan said. The 17-year-old, who as a juvenile is not being identified, was charged with terrorizing. It was not immediately clear which school the teen attends, Gahagan said.
The two other passengers have not been charged, he said.
