Tri-town seniors resume meetings, plan for season

The Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill Senior Citizens group recently held their soft start to the new meeting year.  The group holds two potluck luncheons at the Mapleton Methodist Church, on the first and third Mondays of each month, from October to June.

The group engages in a wide variety of activities besides having a terrific potluck lunch.  They discuss issues such as dealing with dementia, consumer fraud and town issues. Sometimes they just have fun doing craft projects  such as making soap, Christmas decorations or May baskets. Occasionally, there is just plain fun at a meeting in the form of Bingo.

If you are over age 55, you are invited to attend and join the group.  The next meeting of the Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill Seniors will be Nov. 5 at 11:30 a.m.

Please keep in mind the luncheon is potluck.

Basket Making

The history of Native American ash splint potato baskets was presented on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Haystack Historical Society.  Dr. Dena Winslow presented her research from a book of the same title written earlier in 2018.

The research represents the first time that the history of the iconic potato basket has been documented.  These baskets are a familiar sight in Aroostook County and western New Brunswick, yet little has been known about their origins prior to this research.

Winslow’s book also includes a history of potato farming in Aroostook County and a description of how Native American baskets are made.
