115 Years Ago – Oct. 27, 1903
Around town — S.E. Briggs has had his residence on South Main Street connected with the electric light system during the past week. Also, the George W.P. Jerrard Seed Company have had water connections placed in their seed house; and J.D. Pattee has also had his residence connected with the water system.
Shiny new — The pool table which was ordered sometime ago by the Lyndon Club arrived Tuesday. This organization is one of the most successful of its kind and is composed of nearly all the business and professional men in town.
100 Years Ago – Oct. 30, 1918
Unusual — An incident of unusual interest occurred during the past week, when an Indian residing in the far Northern Maine woods went to Van Buren for the first time in five years and upon being informed of the World War happenings and that he would have to register, he immediately departed for Fort Fairfield in company with Chief of Police Cormier to comply with the regulation of local board of District No. 2.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 27, 1943
Succumbs — A host of friends will attend the funeral services at the Holy Rosary Church at 9:00 tomorrow morning for Mitchell Trusty, 86, who died suddenly at the Cary Memorial Hospital at 6:00 Tuesday night. Mr. Trusty was one of the oldest residents of Caribou as clerk in the W.C. Spaulding hardware store for 54 years, beginning his services with the firm in 1887. He was also a fireman for 30 years.
First place spud — Harry Sprague took first place in M.D. McGrath’s 7th annual potato contest this week, topping last week’s 4-pound leader, belonging to Rev. P.H. Lush, by 9 ounces. Rev. Lush now holds second position, crowding Briggs and Solman with a monster weighing 3 pounds, 9 ounces, into third place.
50 Years Ago – Oct. 30, 1968
Youth week — Mayor Gilman ALbair of Caribou has proclaimed this week of Oct. 27-Nov. 3 as youth Week in the City of Caribou and urges all to acknowledge the contribution made the youth of Aroostook County. Youth Week in Caribou will conclude with a gigantic ecumenical youth rally this Sunday.
He’s coming to town — The Retail Trade Division of the Caribou Chamber of Commerce has announced that contact has been made with Santa Claus and he will be arriving in Caribou on Friday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. Jim Ouellette, chairman of the Christmas program, also stated that Santa will be in Caribou at this workshop at 21 Sweden Street on these dates: Nov. 30, Dec. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 23 and 24. The committee is also making arrangements for free cartoon movies for the children on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Grand opening — The Aroostook Centre Mall will hold its grand opening Nov. 1. Radio personalities Janelle Roberts with Marty Stuart of WOZI radio, J.R. Mitchell of Hot Country 97, and Power 96’s John Gilbert will be there broadcasting live. The mall boasts over 1.5 million square feet of enjoyable shopping space, four major stores (JcPenney, Kmart, Sears and Porteous), a 400-seat food court, an eight-screen, 2,000-plus-seat, first-run cinema, and over 40 different stores to choose from.
Soup and Sandwich Barn — A ribbon cutting was held Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Soup and Sandwich Barn on Bennett Drive, where Jean Miesburger has opened a new business. Featured on the menu is Maine potato soup along with other homemade specialty soups. Present for the opening were, from left, Vicki Smith, executive director of the Caribou Chamber of Commerce; Jessie Wyatt of Colchester, England, who is visiting and helping out her daughter at her business; Jean Miesburger, owner and operator; her husband, Pete, and Verne McKenney representing the Caribou City Council.
