SINCLAIR, Maine — Police arrested two Fort Fairfield men Saturday following a high speed chase near the Cross Lake-Sinclair town line with the suspect vehicle hitting speeds of 100 miles per hour.
Maine State Police Cpl. Corey Hafford said in a written statement released Monday that an Audi driven by Wayne Nealy, 37, of Fort Fairfield, failed to stop for him at about 1 p.m. on Route 162 near the town line and a high speed pursuit ensued.
The corporal said in the release that officers with the Madawaska Police Department had tried to stop the same vehicle at about 8 a.m. that morning and that law enforcement agencies had been trying to locate it throughout the day.
Hafford said that after he began pursuing the Audi that afternoon, it turned south on Route 161 and several Maine Game Wardens spotted it traveling southbound, but they too were unable to stop the car.
Hafford reported that the Audi travelled in excess of 100 miles per hour.
Game wardens and Hafford continued following south and located the vehicle at the intersection of Allen’s Alley and Route 161 in the Rainbow Cove area of Madawaska Lake. By that time, both occupants had fled on foot. Members of the Warden Service, Maine State Police and the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office surrounded the area and a state police canine was called to track the pair. Both suspects were quickly located by the dog and arrested, according to the release.
Police charged Neely with eluding, two counts of driving to endanger, criminal speed, illegal attachment of registration plates, operating after suspension and leaving the scene of a property damage crash.
Police also charged both Neely and Jesse Dewley, 20, also of Fort Fairfield, with Illegal possession of a scheduled drug, which was methamphetamine. Officers transported both to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.
The investigation is ongoing.
