To the editor:
When I worked the potato harvest on our family farm growing up, I can still remember falls when we finished ‘digging’ early and my dad would take his harvester and crew to another farm to help them finish their harvest.
I confirmed these snapshot memories with my mother and she said, “Well yes, that was just something you did.” And still do apparently.
This fall, if you weren’t done digging by Oct. 8 or so, it became hard going with the frosty mornings and rainy days. As farmers did finish up, I heard many stories of them immediately moving on to help their neighbors get their potato crop in.
A couple of those farms finished, quite literally, just before snow fell. That was only made possible because of the help they received within the farming community.
Farmers in general are a humble bunch and when they see something that needs to be done, they just do it. So hats off to our hardworking farmers for doing what needed to be done for others in a challenging 2018 harvest season.
