Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Aroostook Health Center. The guest speaker was Deryl Sponberg of Washburn, who worked for the Maine Department of Transportation for 42 years, retiring in 2007. He has worked for TY Lin International for 11 years as a resident consultant, currently working on the Mars Hill and Blaine Main Street Rehabilitation Project as senior project resident.
The plans for Main Street have been underway since 2008, but construction didn’t actually start until May 2018. Once ground was broken on the south end, it didn’t take long for the first issue to crop up — ledge. It was 7 feet deep in one place, one factor that changed the projected finish time.
The system needed to be redesigned in some places when existing water and sewer lines weren’t where they were thought to be. Now that the water, sewer and drainage lines are done, they are concentrating on getting some pavement down on the trenches to allow snow plows to work this winter. Sidewalks and pavements will be started next spring. They now expect the project to be finished in August 2019.
They are using a GPS to register the actual positions of all the underground lines they have installed or found. This will be very beneficial for any future work that needs to be done – hopefully MANY years in the future!
