HOULTON, Maine — The Maine Water Utilities Association recently honored John Clark, retired general manager of the Houlton Water Company, with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Clark served as the general manager of HWC from 1984-2017. He was presented with the award at a meeting in Millinocket in October.
The Houlton Water Company was formed in 1880 and started out as a privately-owned corporation that solely dealt with water distribution. The sewer department was added in 1887, but was not formally merged with HWC until 1938. The electricity portion came on board in 1908.
B.B. McIntyre was the first GM serving from 1902-33, followed by Norman Mullen (1933-53), and Paul Coleman (1953-84).
The award is granted to any member of the Maine Water Utilities Association who made a significant contribution to the profession. Also, the lifetime achievement is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the water profession as evidenced by their professional and/or personal commitment.
“You will not find the description of this award on our website as an annual award as this award is only given to people that deserve special recognition,” said Mike Broadbent, president of the MWUA. “John clearly demonstrated the essence of what this award is all about. Through his professional example, he helps dignify everyone associated with our profession.”
