101 Years Ago – Nov. 22, 1917
New job — Mr. A J. Brown, who had been connected for about six years with the Stebbins Lumber Co. as assistant to Mr. Roach, the woods manager, had resigned his position to accept employment with C. A. Powers of Fort Fairfield, who had bought a tract of timberland in Penobscot County. This tract had been permitted to the American Realty Co., and Mr. Brown acted as Mr. Power’s agent in looking after his interests.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 25, 1943
President’s chair — Dr. Russell M. Brougher, the youngest army chaplain in World War I, was the principal speaker at the Rotary Club luncheon. Dr. Levi Trundy, the club’s new president, was in charge of the session. Dr. Brougher, who was introduced by Ronald S. Wright, chairman of the entertainment committee, spoke in most interesting fashion on the subject “The Road to Happiness.”
50 Years Ago – Nov. 20, 1968
New director — Larry E. Clark of Presque Isle was appointed executive director of the Presque Isle Industrial Council. Dr. Arthur P. Reynolds, president of the council, said Clark was officially named to the position. A native of the area, he had served as acting director since Sept. 16. During the previous year, Clark served in various capacities for the city. He was educated through the Easton school system and also attended courses of study at Aroostook State College in Presque Isle.
Three in a row — The Presque Isle High School Hi-Y made it three in a row when, by a landslide, they elected Billy Ireland to the presidency of the 58th YMCA Older Boy’s Conference to be held at Bangor. Ireland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ireland, succeeded Ray Hews, who had succeeded Bruce Smith, in the position of leadership of the annual conference.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 24, 1993
Developer of the Year — Aroostook Centre Mall developer John Capenos was honored as the Finance Authority of Maine’s Economic Developer of the Year for 1993 on Nov. 9 at FAME’s annual dinner meeting in Portland, where Gov. John McKernan presented with an award.
Ashland coaches honored — Two Ashland Community High School coaches were honored by the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches for contributions to their sport. Bill Nemer, the girls varsity basketball coach, received a plaque for achieving 100 career wins. He was 106-52 in his eight-year career. Eddie St. John was given a service award for five years of continuous service as the junior varsity girls’ coach.
Lifetime inductees — Two members of the American Legion Post 88 in Presque Isle were awarded paid lifetime memberships at their annual meeting. Dick Blanchard, adjutant, and Vincent Grant, finance officer, received the honor of 40 years and 29 years of service, respectively. This honor had been bestowed upon only two other members from Post 88. Carl McGlauflin, commander, and Burns Weeks, vice commander, presented the awards.
