PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Gerald W. Clark, 95, passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018. He was born in Presque Isle on October 20, 1923, the son of Earl and Verna (Grant) Clark.
Gerald graduated from Presque Isle High School, class of 1941, then attended Husson Business School in Bangor. While there, he applied for a job in the War Dept. in Washington, D.C., and was accepted. After working at the Pentagon for a few months, he was asked to go to High Point, N.C., to help setup a branch of Demobilized Records for War Veterans. After it was in full operation, he decided to join the Armed Services, where he served for 3 years; 2.5 years in the South Pacific, Australia, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. He then arrived back to the United States on Christmas Eve in 1945 and received his discharge from the service on January 1946. He met his wife-to-be, Beryl J. Churchill, on May 2, and was married in November of that year.
Gerald worked at the Presque Isle Air Base as a time keeper for a year, then they purchased a farm in Mars Hill. He farmed for 30 years and was also a Sub. Mail Carrier on the RFD Route for 12 years. He was also the treasurer of Mars Hill, Westfield and Blaine Potato Grower’s Association. He sold the farm and moved to Washburn in 1978, and was employed by Potato Service working as a truck driver, then as a poly machine operator.
He worked in Presque Isle as a sub. mail carrier, and after a few years went full-time until his retirement in 1987 after 25 years of service. After moving to Presque Isle, he attended the Presque Isle Wesleyan Church.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 72 years, Beryl (Churchill); his son, Alan and Nancy Clark; his grandchildren, Wayne and Jeri Clark, Sharman and Andy Helstrom, Bryan Clark, Brittany Clark, Brooke Clark, Robyn Holdsworth, Ronda Johnston and Randy Libby; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He will also be missed by his sisters-in-law, Evelyn Day, Linda Sowers and Juanita Edwards; and his brothers-in-law, Frances and Ginny Churchill, and Robert and Joyce Churchill. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by all of his siblings; and his son, Scott Clark.
