100 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1918
Accepts position — Mrs. Sophie Farrar has accepted a position in the office of the Clerk of Courts, and began her work on Monday.
Arrived safely — Friends of Grace Archibald will be interested to know that she has reached France and is now located in a little French village, assisting in the reconstruction work. She writes that she enjoyed the trip over, although the weather at one time was rather rough. She was able to be on deck the greater part of the time and writes most interestingly of the trip and scenery of France.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 2, 1943
Accepts new position — Joseph S. Robinson, for the past two and one-half years assistant manager of the Plywood Corp., resigned that position this week to become associated in business with Paul Jackins. Prior to his position with the local mill, Mr. Robinson was for 10 years in the employ of Texas Company here. Before that he was engaged in school teaching, having taught sciences at Houlton High School for two years.
Elected — Roy Bither Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bither, was elected school president of Ricker Classical Institute at the annual election held by the Australian ballot system. He is a member of the senior class. He has been active in Hi-Y work and other school activities and is a member of the National Honor Society.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 27, 1968
Joins Foundation — Paul H. Adams, a native of Houlton, has been appointed executive director for the Pine Tree Chapter, Arthritis Foundation, announced Robert F. Ritchie, M. D., chapter chairman. Mr. Adams replaced Arthur DeWitt Grant of Cape Elizabeth, who chartered the chapter in 1954 and had served as executive director for the past 10 years.
Trip to Chicago — Stephanie Bubar, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Bubar of Littleton, state winner in the safety contest, and James Kervin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kervin of Houlton, state winner in boy’s achievement, will be leaving Bangor on Thanksgiving Day, bound for Chicago and the 47th National 4-H Club Congress.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 1, 1993
Plaque for library — A plaque was recently placed on one of the walls of Cary Library honoring a benefactor of the town, Jonah Dunn. The plaque was discovered in the library attic this fall by trustee Frank Peltier, who was conducting general cleanup in anticipation of improvements in the children’s room downstairs. The 20-by-30-inch solid bronze plaque gave Dunn’s name and his past achievements for the town. The memorial was originally given to the library by Charles E. Dunn and Charles Dunn Jr. in 1926, the 100th anniversary of Jonah Dunn’s arrival in Houlton.
