Another basketball season has begun as multiple teams tipped off their new year Friday and Saturday.
Teams that did not debut over the weekend were scheduled to start their play by Wednesday night.
The Hodgdon boys and girls opened their basketball season with victories Friday as the Hawk girls edged Shead of Eastport 27-23, while the boys soared past the Tigers 62-26.
In the girls game, the Hawks jumped to an 8-3 first-quarter lead and managed to hold off a determined Shead squad for the win. Sabra Scott tossed in nine points (including 7-of-8 from the free throw line) to lead the Hawks. Kylie Mooers added eight, while Autumn Ganzel chipped in five.
For Shead, Halle Sullivan had eight points, while Cassidee Lawrence added five.
Hodgdon led 8-3, 12-8 and 22-16 at the quarter breaks.
In the boys game, Josh Foster poured in 21 points to lead the Hawks to victory. Josh Palmer chipped in 11 points, and Seth Tapley and Michael Sanders each added six.
For Shead, Gavin Bowen led the way with 14 points, while Logan Trott added six.
The Hawks led from the onset, taking a 22-8 first-quarter lead, which grew to 43-13 at halftime. Hodgdon led 53-22 after three periods.
Results for other games played over the opening weekend were as follows:
Fort Fairfield girls 72, Katahdin 40 — On the Cougars’ home court Saturday in Stacyville, Fort Fairfield opened up its offense and gained the easy win. Fort Fairfield’s Cammi King-DeMerchant totaled 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and she also collected 11 rebounds. Brenna LeVasseur had 13 points and Kourtney West had a strong showing with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tigers, who led 14-2 after one quarter, forced 32 turnovers in the game. Makala Hartsgrove’s 16 points led Katahdin.
Houlton boys 75, Central Aroostook 53 — At Mars Hill Friday, the Shiretowners limited the host Panthers to three points in the second quarter to open up a 20-point halftime lead, then shrugged off a late comeback attempt by CA for the victory.
“We had a hard time breaking Houlton’s full court pressure, and in the second quarter we just went into a deep freeze and couldn’t score,” said Panther coach Jason Woodworth, “then the deficit was too big to overcome.”
Keegan Gentle and Nolan Porter scored 26 and 18 points, respectively, for the Shires, while the Panther duo of Brayden Bradbury and Ben Thomas poured in 23 and 18, respectively.
