County residents urged to become foster parents to aid needy children

Right now in Maine, many children are in need of a safe and supportive home to help them succeed, according to the Aroostook Mental Health Center, which asks County residents to consider becoming therapeutic foster parents.

“If you have ever thought about becoming a foster parent, or felt that you have so much to offer others, then you may be the individual to provide the support needed to help a child in need and show them there is hope for a brighter future,” said Chad Crandall,

AMHC therapeutic foster care home developer.

Crandall said center staffers understand that becoming a foster parent is an incredible commitment, but he adds that “the rewards are immeasurable.”

AMHC also provides the support needed to make each child placement successful.

The program reimburses foster parents to help care for the children in their homes and for necessary mileage.

“AMHC will partner with you in a flexible, wrap-around approach to treatment for some of our community’s children in need,” Crandall said. “Let’s build a better future for our community’s children together.”

Eligibility requirements for foster parents include that they:

— Must be at least 21 years of age.

— Be in good health.

— Have a positive and supportive approach to parenting.

— Offer a nurturing family relationship and supportive environment.

— Be able to pass required background checks.

— Be flexible and willing to work with birth parents, DHHS workers, therapists and other team members.
