BREWER, Maine — It took two totally different ways to pull it off, but the Presque Isle hockey team swept its weekend opponents in matches held at Penobscot Ice Arena.
PI takes a 3-0 record into Wednesday’s home contest against Houlton-Hodgdon.
The Wildcats needed overtime to get past Hampden in a high-scoring game Friday by a score of 7-6. The next day, PI dominated the Brewer Witches, 9-3.
Jake Stevens netted an unassisted goal 16 seconds into overtime to give Presque Isle the win over the Broncos. Stevens also contributed three assists. Thomas Patenaude erupted for four goals, while Gage LeTourneau and Colby Carlisle registered the others. Cameron Levasseur picked up two assists, while Connor DeMerchant, Jonah Roy and LeTourneau added one apiece.
Cooper Leland scored four of Hampden’s goals and Sam Economy netted a goal and three assists.
Andre Daigle saved 27 of 33 shots for PI, while Evan Thomas made 34 saves on 41 shots for Hampden.
Coach Carl Flynn said his team was able to survive a costly penalty in the second period.
“A five minute boarding penalty really hurt us and we dug a deep hole that we were fortunate to climb out of,” he said.
It was a different story on Saturday as the Wildcats stayed out of the penalty box and rolled to the win over the Witches. Patenaude scored three more goals to increase his season total to 10. DeMerchant had two and Colby Bonville, Bailey York, Stevens and LeTourneau each added one.
Stevens and Noah Roy both had two assists, while Carter Jackson, LeTourneau, Patenaude, York, Carlisle and Jonah Roy each added one.
Daigle and Brandon Poitras combined on the goaltending chores and combined for 15 saves for PI. The Wildcats got off 51 shots against Brewer throughout the match.
“Brewer took majority of the penalties and we capitalize on those mistakes,” Flynn said. “This is the first regular season game that I think we played near our potential.”
