Houlton Police Department hosts awards banquet

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Police Department held its annual Christmas Party and Awards Night Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Houlton Lodge of Elks.  

The evening recognized all the men and women of HPD, including recent retirees and their families. Several officers, dispatchers, support staff and retirees were recognized for their efforts to the department and community.

“Although everyone at HPD works each and every day to serve our community with professionalism, a few were recognized for outstanding results,” Houlton Police Chief Tim DeLuca said. “I am proud of each and everyone here at HPD for their service, dedication and positive community interaction to Houlton.”

Riley Cunningham, the daughter of Houlton Police Officer Jasmine Cyr, was this year’s recipient of the “Citizen of the Year” award. Cunningham witnessed a “serious situation” according to chief DeLuca, and quickly notified the authorities who were able to respond in a quick manner.

Retired Cpl. Dana Duff was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Duff, who started with the Houlton Police Department in 1974, spent 42 years with the department before retiring in 2016.

“Dana’s reputation was that he was a fair and firm officer of the law who treated everyone with respect,” chief DeLuca said. “His actions had, and continue to have, a profound impact on this department.”

Tammy Goetsch of Adopt a Block of Aroostook County and Cpl. William Janakis were both presented with a Community Service Award.

Officer Cyr was presented with the Officer of the Year award, while Carol Grant received the Dispatcher of the Year award.

Receiving a department citation for “Outstanding Work Performance” were officers Cyr and Travis Smith, who also received a “Life-Saving Citation.” The “Most Improved” award went to Rachel Fitzpatrick, while Mallory Clayton was named “Rookie of the Year.”

A “Family Commitment” award was presented to Abram Nason, while the “Positive Morale” award went to David Rairdon and the “Chief’s Award” was presented to Tina Bennett.
