CARIBOU, Maine — Contractors with Soderberg Construction and County Abatement, Inc. started Friday tearing down the Caribou Learning Center building, which formerly housed RSU 39 adult and alternative education programs.
The learning center is one of several buildings being demolished as part of the new $50 million PreK-8 school to be built on Bennett Drive and anticipated to open in 2020. The new facility will replace Hilltop, Teague Park, and Caribou Middle schools, with Hilltop Elementary School set to be converted into a senior living facility and Teague Park Elementary School and Caribou Middle School set for demolition.
Additionally, the former Sincock Administrative Building and Learning Center will be demolished to meet land swap requirements, as the new school is being constructed on the former Teague Park property.
Teague Park, which is adjacent to Teague Park Elementary School, will move across the street next to the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center as part of the project.
Construction on the new school was recently placed on hold for the winter, and is scheduled to continue next spring.
