100 Years Ago – Dec. 25, 1918
New position— Miss Lena Wilcox has resigned her position in the Presque Isle Telephone office, and has accepted a position as stenographer with Brackett, Shaw & Lunt, in Somersworth, N.H.
Resigned position — J.B. Stewart, who has been connected with the B&A Railroad for the past six or seven years, has resigned, to take effect Jan. 1, 1919, and will enter the employ of the Great Northern Paper Co.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 30, 1943
Golden wedding — Mr. and Mrs. John E. Murray of Danforth will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on the first day of the New Year. They will hold open house on that day for all of their friends who wish to call. Mr. and Mrs. Murray were married January 1, 1894, and have had 18 children, 11 of whom are living. Two of their sons are in the Armed Forces. They have 21 grandchildren.
Sending thanks — The ladies who have labored so diligently and industriously for the Southern Aroostook Chapter, American Red Cross can take some satisfaction in the knowledge that their work is appreciated according to two letters of thanks received this week by Mrs. Cora M. Putnam. The local chapter has sent 1,000 kit bags to Presque Isle where they have been distributed among soldiers departing for overseas service.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 25, 1968
Gets award — Woodrow (Woody) W. Farrar of Houlton has been named as the recipient of a Carnegie Hero Fund Commission award in connection with his activities the night of the J.J. Newberry Co. fire last February. Mr. Farrar was a resident of one of the apartments in the building that was completely destroyed during a fire which took several hours to control. In announcing the award, David B. Oliver, manager of the Commission, stated in part: ‘Our attention was called to your heroic rescue act by which you saved Tessa H. Gibson from suffocation on February 20, 1968. A report of your act was furnished to us later through the courtesy of Mr. B.M. Wetmore, fire chief of Houlton. We take great pleasure in advising you now that in recognition of your outstanding heroism the Commission has awarded you a bronze medal and the sum of $750.’
25 Years Ago – Dec. 29, 1993
Seasonal visit — Mrs. Kim Plourde’s language arts class at the Houlton Southside School visited Gardiner Nursing Home last week for a holiday visit and took time to have photos taken with a few residents.
Contribution — Houlton WalMart’s Christmas charity contribution was given to the Salvation Army. The contribution represented a percentage of sales from 7-10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, and from fundraising events held by associates throughout the Christmas season. At the presentation were; Lt. Brian Chamberlain, Byron Wentworth, store manager, and Bob Ellis, chairman of the Salvation Army board.
