101 Years Ago – Dec. 27, 1917

$200 in proceeds — Harry Green, the clothier, who made the generous offer to give 5 percent of his gross sales for was charity objects between Dec. 15 and Christmas, realized as the proceeds of the offer the sum of $186.58, and Mr. Green added thereto sufficient to bring the amount up to $200. One hundred of this was turned over to Rev. J. C. Gregory, for the Armenian and Assyrian relief fund, and the other hundred went to the Jewish war sufferers.

75 Years Ago –  Dec. 30, 1943

New sergeant — Elton S. Carter, 24-years-old, radio repair worker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Carter of Mapleton, had been promoted from Corporal to Sergeant, at the Eighth Air Force Flying Fortress Base, announced by Lt. Col. James L. Travis, Group Commander.

Residence houses operators — The New England Tel. and Tel. Co. purchased the Beaulieu property, formerly the Phair property, at 164 Normal Avenue, Manager Harold G. Brown announced. The house to be used to accommodate approximately two-thirds of the operating force of the Presque Isle exchange. Many of the operators who worked in Presque Isle came from surrounding towns and the Company intended to provide homelike conditions for those girls who were unable to live at home.

50 Years Ago –  Dec. 25, 1968

Dunlavy joins bank — William H. Dunlavy, a Presque Isle native, formerly of the Northern National Bank in Presque Isle, joined the staff at the First National Bank of Fort Fairfield as an assistant cashier and manager of its proposed new Presque Isle Office to be opened. Dunlavy who assumed his new position Nov. 18, had been associated with Northern National Bank for the previous seven years, most recently as a credit and loan officer in the commercial loan officer in the commercial loan department.

  1. P. Hood promotes — Carroll S. Fogg, 84, Presque Isle, was named manager of H. P. Hood and Sons’ Bangor ice cream branch. He had been manager of the Presque Isle ice cream branch since 1964. Fogg joined Hood in 1935 in Farmington, Maine, and in 1937, became a route salesman for the Auburn ice cream branch. He transferred to the Bangor branch in 1951 prior to his promotion to Presque Isle.

25 Years Ago –  Dec. 29, 1993

All-American status — Danielle and Derrick Donovan gained All-American titles as they ran to a third and eighth-place finish in the National Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships in Smithfield, R.I., on Dec. 11. Danielle’s third place finish marked her finest showing in national cross-country competition. The precious year, she finished 19th in the 13-14 year old, four-kilometer race in Mobile, Ala. Danielle covered the current course in a time of 15:51. Derrick was spiked in the previous year’s rame and running with one shoe, finished 150th. He ran the three-kilometer course in 11:16 in the current competition.

Counting on crown — Jack Woods, Caribou fire chief, presented a plaque to Jim McKenney, director of Crown Ambulance, Presque Isle. The plaque was given in appreciation to Crown Ambulance for providing emergency assistance to the Caribou Ambulance Service. The presentation was made at a Region IV ambulance directors’ meeting in Presque Isle.
