CARIBOU, Maine — Thirteen skiers braved the elements for the annual New Year’s Day Ski Race held at Caribou High School Tuesday, Jan. 1.
The fastest skier was Jason Bartley of Presque Isle, who finished the five-kilometer event in 13 minutes and 18.9 seconds. Joey Bard of Caribou was second in 14:30.1, while Max Bartley of Presque Isle came in third in 15:16.7.
Curtis Wheeler of New Sweden (15:26.6) and Carl Soderberg of Caribou (17:18.2) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
The first female to cross the finish line was Valentina Annunziata of Nice, France. The University of Maine at Presque Isle student came in at 21:54.4, which was good for ninth overall.
The other finishers, and their times, are as follows: sixth, Brian Powers, 17:25.7; seventh, Evan Graves, 17:28.7; eighth, Jordan Powers, 18:46.9; 10th, Julie Bouchard, 23:39.2; 11th, Kyle Bartley, 31:37.6; 12th, Julia Bartley, 34:38.5; and 13th, Heidi Bartley, 34:39.
The race was put on by the Caribou High School Nordic ski team and the Northern Skier Club. A meal of chicken stew and rolls was provided to the competitors following the race.
