115 Years Ago – Jan. 8, 1904
Purchasing goods — Theo. J. Fox left here Thursday for Boston and New York, where he will purchase a line of goods for the three clothing stores run by Fox Bros. He will also purchase new stock throughout for the store to be opened in Caribou next spring.
Record breaker — Monday was a record breaker for cold in this section of the country. The lowest point reached by the thermometer here was 32 degrees. This low temperature combined with a heavy wind made it very hard to keep the house warm, and those who were forced to be out of doors suffered severely.
100 Years Ago – Jan. 8, 1919
Lunchroom — Patrons of the Bowlodrome as well as others may soon be able to get hot lunches from the lunch room which is being installed, probably being open for business Saturday. This lunch counter will be conducted in a first-class manner, and the best of hot lunches will be served here during the day and evenings. Messrs. Flemming Bros., proprietors of the Bowlodrome, have secured a competent man to take charge of the counter. This is an innovation that will be greatly appreciated by the bowling patrons.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 13, 1944
Attends meeting — Francis Gooch left Wednesday for Boston, Mass., where he will attend a meeting of the New England Theatre Managers. Charles Skouras, national chairman of the War Activity Committee of the Motion Picture Industry, will be the speaker at the meeting.
Business changes hands — Norville A. Reid last week purchased from T. R. Grant and Emmons W. Robinson, the J. E. Robinson Co., known as Robinson’s Ice Cream Bar, which has been in continuous operation under the same name in Houlton for 66 years and in the same location for the past 28 years. The business will continue to be operated under the same name.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 8, 1969
50th wedding anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Ellery H. Watson of Littleton were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Williams of Monticello on New Year’s Day. Mr. and Mrs. Watson were married January 1, 1919, in Monticello at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Hedley Bragdon, when Mr. Bragdon performed his first wedding ceremony.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 12, 1994
Geography Bee winners — The National Geography Bee was held Jan. 5 at Houlton High School for the seventh- and eighth-graders. Eric Sussman was named the winner of the bee while Charles Espie was runner-up.
New sergeant — Dale P. Lancaster of Skowhegan has been promoted to the rank of sergeant in the Maine State Police and has been assigned to Troop F in Aroostook County. The promotion was made recently by the chief of the state police, Col. Alfred R. Skolfield.
