CARIBOU, Maine — Showcasing a dazzling routine, the Presque Isle Wildcats captured the 2019 Aroostook League Cheering Championship Friday evening at Caribou High School.
The Wildcats’ score of 59.9 easily distanced the team from second place Houlton, who finished with 50.3 points. Last year’s County winner, Central Aroostook, finished third at 47.6 points. Rounding out the competition were Caribou, 45.8; Fort Fairfield, 37.1; and Southern Aroostook, 25.2.
The Warriors of Southern Aroostook, competing for the first time in the cheering event, were presented with the Spirit Award.
“I am very proud of them, especially going up against squads in a higher class,” said SA coach Lisa Casey. “We practiced very hard this season, I think they were a little nervous and excited at the same time to be competing. Their dedication and passion shined through and winning the spirit award was an honor.”
Following the varsity competition, middle school squads from Houlton, Caribou, Presque Isle and Central Aroostook performed their routines for the large audience.
Individual awards were presented to the following categories
All-Star Jumps — 1, Isabelle Cosby, Houlton; 2, Lizzy Hotham, Central Aroostook.
All-Star Tumbling — 1, Jack Schafer, Central Aroostook; 2, Clara Kohlbacher, Presque Isle.
All-Star Stunt — 1, Presque Isle (Taylor Hedrich, Jeanne Knight, Sophia Lambert, Emma Kolbacher, Anna Mautz).
