FORT KENT, Maine — The Maine Arts Commission launched its 2019 Arts Iditarod, an informational tour from Portland to Fort Kent and Damariscotta to Bangor, on Jan. 8. One of four regional meetings is planned in Fort Kent on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
The first two sessions took place at Space Gallery in Portland and at the Bangor Arts Exchange. The group planned a third session Jan. 16 at River Arts in Damariscotta, and will wrap up the event from 12-4 p.m. on Feb. 5 at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
The regional session provides free professional development workshops, information and discussion opportunities to the state’s diverse arts and cultural organizations, as well as individual artists, educators, and community policy makers and members interested in development in and through the arts.
“An important part of the Art Commission’s mission is to support the cultural sector in all parts of the state,” said Julie Richard, the commission’s executive director. “It’s essential that we provide critical learning opportunities that help our sector stretch and grow.”
All of the Iditarod sessions are open to the public. In the event of inclement weather, the Iditarod will be postponed.
Workshops will include fundraising, cultural planning, and strategic planning for both arts organizations and artists. In addition, there will also be information sessions on several of the Arts Commission initiatives, including ArtsEngageME, the commission’s nonprofit advocacy and support organization; the Maine’s Bicentennial celebration; and the agency’s grant funding opportunities. Food and refreshments will be served.
Advance registration is recommended. Visit the Maine Arts Commission website to review, as of Jan. 1, the new grant program guidelines and open applications.
