More snow on tap for Caribou area where record for January already broken

CARIBOU, Maine — Although a major nor’easter just passed through Maine on Sunday, residents shouldn’t put away their shovels and snowblowers just yet.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Aroostook County, northern Penobscot, northern Somerset, and northern and central Piscataquis Counties. The advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Wednesday until 11 a.m. Thursday.

Mixed precipitation is expected, along with 2-4 inches of snow, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service in Caribou. Ice accumulations of one tenth of an inch of ice also could occur.

Motorists should plan on a slippery commute.

A total of 47.4 inches of snow has fallen in Caribou so far in January, which is the most ever observed already during the month in the Caribou area since officials started keeping weather records in 1939. The old January record of 44.5 inches was established in January 1994.

Through Jan. 22, 2019, a seasonal total of 99.2 inches of snow has been observed this winter at Caribou. This surpasses the previous record of 96.2 inches during the winter of 2007-2008. The winter of 2007-2008 ended up being the snowiest on record at Caribou with a total of 197.8 inches.

The snowpack remains solid, with 32 inches on the ground in Caribou, compared to 9 inches in Bangor and 6 inches in Portland.
