The Aroostook Waste Solutions recycling igloos have landed next to the Mapleton Town Office and are ready for residents to use. In last week’s Star-Herald, a photo of the igloos was on the front page.
Here are five tips regarding the use of the igloos.
1: Do not bag recyclables except for the green igloo which is for magazines and catalogs which can be tied, bundled or bagged.
2: The red igloo is for clear No. 2 plastic containers; clear milk and water jugs are examples. Remove all caps or lids and try to crush all containers before placing in the igloo.
3: Place all colored No. 2 plastic containers in the blue igloo following the same rules as the listed above. Do not deposit whipped cream, plastic coffee cans or butter because they are not recyclable and must be placed in regular trash.
4: Do not deposit any other paper, such as office paper, cardboard, junk mail, etc. in the newspaper (yellow) and the magazine and catalogs (green) igloos. All pasteboard or paperboard boxes are to be disposed in your regular trash and not in any of the igloos. Remember to bundle or bag magazines and catalogs and leave all newspapers loose.
5: All cans made of tin or steel must be washed and crushed before placing in the gray igloo. All aluminum cans, trays, foil and glass are non-recyclable and should go in regular trash.
These are significant changes particularly to the recycling program. Anyone with questions and desire more information about the changes and the arrangement with the area trash haulers and the new Aroostook Waste Solutions (AWS), the following town office webpage contains more information: or by visiting the town office.
Dog Registration
Time is beginning to run out for registering and obtaining dog tags for 2019. Come into the Town Office and register before 1/31/2019 and beat the $25 dollar late fee.
First Friday lunch
The monthly First Friday Luncheon held at the Mapleton Methodist Church is scheduled for Feb. 1, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. This luncheon will be special as it is the winter luncheon. The chefs have promised a warm and filling luncheon to help everyone forget about the cold weather. Who knows what the chefs will prepare for lunch, but everyone will be thankful for this “forget the cold and snow” meal.
While the food is always delicious, the real joy is sharing a meal with long-time friends as well as making new friends, sharing family updates, stories and memories. Remember there is no charge for the lunch, but donations will be accepted.
Senior meeting
The Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill seniors will have their next potluck luncheon at the Mapleton Methodist Church on Monday, Feb. 4, at 11:30 a.m.
Caroline Ballerstein reminds everyone over age 55, you are invited to attend and join the group. It is a traditional potluck lunch, so bring something and enjoy the lunch prepared by experienced cooks.
