GUILFORD, Maine — Caribou sophomores Caleb Robbins and Kaden DeMerchant both placed third in their weight divisions at the Penobscot Valley Conference Wrestling Championships Saturday.
Robbins, who has been battling illness and injuries for a few weeks, still managed to place in the 138-pound category. He placed fourth at the PVCs in the 120-pound division a year ago. He went 2-1 on the day, collecting decisions over Everett Huckins of Ellsworth and Colby Emery of PCHS.
DeMerchant, competing in the 160-pound class, picked up three wins on the afternoon. He pinned Mattanawcook Academy’s Pacey Clark, gained a 7-0 decision over Zac Grower of Calais and pinned Baylor Landsman of Mount Desert Island.
Both now have 21 victories on the season, which leads the Vikings, heading into the Class B regionals on Feb. 9 in Ellsworth.
Caribou placed 10th out of 15 teams in the standings with 32 points. Foxcroft Academy edged Dexter for the PVC team title.
Angel Riopelle in 145 and Ethan Edgecomb in 106 were other point scorers for the Vikings.
“Our most experienced wrestlers are sophomores and they are starting to jell and make some noise as they are getting noticed by other coaches in the conference,” said Caribou coach James “Chico” Hernandez. “We know our day will come and are optimistic about the future.”
