Owl teams hope to bounce back with wins Tuesday versus MMA

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team, which had beaten Thomas College three weeks ago in Waterville, was defeated by the Terriers at home Saturday.

The Owls lost the following afternoon at home to Berkeley College of New Jersey, 86-55, and take a 9-12 overall record into Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. home contest against Maine Maritime Academy.

UMPI fell to 3-8 in North Atlantic Conference play after the 82-71 loss to Thomas. The Owls led 55-51 midway through the second half before the visitors battled back to take the lead and build on it in the late going.

Will Griffiths scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds for UMPI, while Griffin Guerrette and Shyquinn Dix added 11 points each. Dix also contributed eight assists and five rebounds.

Loveguerson Fleurine paced Thomas with 19 points.

Berkeley College is now 15-4 after handling the Owls Sunday afternoon. Guerrette scored 14 points and dished out five assists to lead UMPI. Ten other Owls scored points, including Luke Peterson with eight and Parker Onorato with six.

Thomas tops UMPI women

The Owl women’s playoff chances received a blow following Saturday’s, 65-60, loss to Thomas College at Wieden Gymnasium in Presque Isle.

UMPI stayed close throughout, but didn’t have enough down the stretch to catch the visitors. Rhylee Wright and Marissa Valdivia-Reagle both scored 18 points for the Owls. Wright grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked two shots, while Reagle had eight steals, seven rebounds and five assists. Hunter Mercier tallied 13 points and added six boards and four steals for the home team.

UMPI fell to 7-14 overall and 2-9 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Owls take on Maine Maritime Academy Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Wieden Gymnasium. UMPI upset MMA on Jan. 19 in Castine, 57-53.
