101 Years Ago – Feb. 14, 1918
Halifax thankful — Ralph P. Bell, chairman of the Halifax Relief Committee, had written J. F. Guiou, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, acknowledging receipt of the contribution of $150 from the people of Presque Isle toward the relief of the Halifax sufferers. The letter said: “Will you kindly accept for yourself and convey to all interested in this kind donation, our very sincere thanks for such a tangible evidence of their sympathy.”
75 Years Ago – Feb. 24, 1944
Production Credit meeting — Guy L. Hewitt of Mars Hill was re-elected to the board of directors of the Presque Isle Production Credit Association at their annual meeting held at the Northeastland Hotel. The meeting was an all day session starting with President Ralph W. Cary acting as chairman. The morning session was featured by a board of directors’ and secretary-treasurer’s reports.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 12, 1969
Top homemaker — Patricia A. Cyr was named 1969 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for Presque Isle High School because she achieved the highest score in a homemaking knowledge and attitude test. She took the exam along with other senior class girls in her school Dec. 3 and she was awarded a special Betty Crocker silver charm. Aslo, her paper was entered with those of other school winners in the state in competition for the title, State Homemaker of Tomorrow. The winner of this honor is granted a $1,500 scholarship from General Mills, Inc., sponsor of the annual program, and the school receives a complete set of Encyclopaedia Britannica by Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. The state runners-up are granted $500 scholarships.
Bank post — Milford Shaw, formerly of Easton, was elected vice president of the First National Bank in Bar Harbor. Shaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Volney Shaw of Easton, had been with the bank since 1957. He became assistant cashier in 1960 and cashier in 1963. His new title was vice-president and cashier. Shaw graduated from Easton High School, Aroostook School of Commerce, Presque Isle, and graduated cum laude with a B.S. degree from Husson College and the School of Banking at Williams College.
25 Years Ago – Feb. 16, 1994
Retired from dealership — Officials at Freeman Lincoln-Mercury in Presque Isle announced the retirement of Leopold (Paul) Charette. Charette put away his tools and cleared his calendar after 35 years of service. He began his service as a mechanic at the local auto dealer in 1957, working at a repair facility operated on the Presque Isle Air Force Base. Following the closing of that repair shop, he worked at the company’s Industrial Street facility. He worked his way up to parts and service manager.
Semifinalist — Jennifer Boyd, the daughter of Fred and Ethelyn Boyd of Mars Hill and a senior at Central Aroostook High School, was chosen as a semifinalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. From more than 100,000 applicants nationwide, Boyd was one of 1,814 semifinalists chosen for their balance of leadership, character and achievement in school and community.
