115 Years Ago – Feb. 12, 1904
Entertainment — Fred Stephenson went to Smyrna Mills with his hurdy-gurdy Monday, where he furnished music for a dance in the evening.
Running late — The trains were all late Wednesday, on account of the heavy winds which blew the loose snow to the tracks, filling in the cuts. Train 29 for Caribou Tuesday evening was held at Littleton until Wednesday morning on account of two freights ahead of it being stalled.
100 Years Ago – Feb. 12, 1919
Attend conference — Mrs. A. Smith and Mrs. Hannah Edbland attended the Peace Conference in Boston last week representing the Houlton Woman’s Club.
Gone for a week — Messrs. Geo. A. Gorham, E.L. Vail, Beecher Putnam and Justin C. Rose left Monday for a week’s stay at the Emerson lumber camps at Island Falls.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 17, 1944
45 day drive — The public schools of Houlton sold United States War bonds of a cash value in excess of $55,800 between Jan. 1 and Feb. 16, Supt. George J. Cumming announced this morning. Two of the schools, Pleasant street and High school, each sold more than enough bonds to purchase an airplane valued at $15,000.
Candidates announced — The following candidates are announced for all available Municipal offices: James P. Archibald, candidate for the Town Council for a three year term; Ralph L. Berry, candidate for reelection to the Town Council for a term of one year; Mrs. Harry W. Grinnell, candidate for reelection to the Superintending School Committee for a term of three years; J.R. Harvey, candidate for the Town Council for a three year term; John K. Palmer, candidate for the Board of Directors of the Houlton Water Co. for a term of three years and N.H. Solman, candidate for reelection as Town Clerk.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 12, 1969
Changes to the water — Fluoridation of the Town’s water system, which was approved at the regular town meeting in 1967, will become a reality next Tuesday, almost two years later. Paul W. Coleman, superintendent of the Houlton Water Company, said the company will begin adding fluorides to the water on Tuesday. He said the addition will add no color, no taste, and no odor to the water, and no cost to the water user.
Winner — Mrs. Frances Fitzpatrick was presented with a $100 check as a winner in First National Stores Deck O Money contest by local store manager, Steve Hall. Mrs. Fitzpatrick is the second $100 winner in two weeks at the First National Store at the Houlton Shopping Center.
25 Years Ago – Feb. 16, 1994
Valentine gifts — Mrs. Lt. Barbara Chamberlain of the Salvation Army donated Valentine favors to Heleana Nickerson, Houlton Regional Hospital food services director. Ladies Home League Club members made the 67 gifts for distribution to hospital patients on Monday.
Homemade popcorn balls — Madigan Estates held a popcorn ball sale to benefit the American Heart Association recently. Participating in making the popcorn balls were; Doris DeWitt, Harriet Harding, Martha Olmstead, Helena Mooers, Gertrude Kennedy, Mena Gravel, Ruth Knights, Esther Faulkner and Sandra Hartford. Madigan Estates raised $19 in sales.
