Police report helping New Sweden man who was snowbound in home for three weeks

NEW SWEDEN , Maine — Officers recently used snowshoes to assist a local man they say had been snowbound in his home for three weeks.

According to Maine State Police Trooper Nate Desrosier, the man, who police are not identifying, called a local radio station earlier this month regarding being trapped in his home. A station employee who knows the man then called the police to perform a wellness check.

Desrosier said the snow in the man’s driveway was waist high when he arrived on Feb. 8, making the home nearly impossible to access. The trooper contacted Ed Christie from the Maine Warden Service and the two were able to approach the home wearing snowshoes.

Once the men made it to the residence, the resident told them that he was low on food and “had been melting snow for water,” according to a state police report about the wellness check.

Desrosier said that the man was “not injured or sick” and that the officers arranged to have a friend of his help him out and take him to buy groceries.

The trooper declined to publicly release further information about the incident or the resident, but indicated that the man was grateful for their assistance.

Police and the Red Cross periodically remind Mainers, especially during the winter to check on their neighbors, especially elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children.
