Great success — Miss Lucy Grant, who left here for Boston last fall, is having great success in her singing. She sang in a crowded church in Boston a few nights ago and the people were greatly pleased with her voice.
100 Years Ago – Feb. 19, 1919
Attend opening — Miss Margaret Monoghan, head milliner for Mrs. D. B. Gillin, left last week for a two-week visit at her home in Ellsworth. From there she will attend the millinery openings in Boston, after which she will return to Houlton.
Business trip — G. W. Richards and S. A. Bennett left Monday evening on the Pullman for Boston and New York on a business trip.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 24, 1944
New Rotary members — Stanley Wasson, new manager of the J.C. Penney Co. store here, was taken into the Houlton Rotary Club as a new member and Miller Stanton, local Snider Packing Co. manager, was accepted as a transfer from Avon, N.Y.
Accepted position — Mrs. Eleanor Fairley of Boston, Mass., has accepted the position as teacher of English recently held by Ivan Sherman in the Houlton schools. Mrs. Fairley has had over nine years’ experience. She has taught a year and a half in New York state, three years in Wisconsin, and five years in Maine.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 19, 1969
Appointed — Jack Ketch, president of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce, has announced the appointment of Malcolm York as chairman of the annual fund drive. Mr. York, a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce and owner of York’s Book Store, has been very active in chamber work for several years.
Celebrates birthday — Mrs. Harold R. Dickinson of Houlton celebrated her 80th birthday Sunday by enjoying one of her favorite pastimes, snowsledding. With her were her son, M. Jerome Dickinson of Houlton, Mrs. J. F. Weber, of Brewer and another daughter, Mrs. F. W. McConnell, also of Brewer.
25 Years Ago – Feb. 23, 1994
Veterans remembered — Area war veterans bowed their heads as the names of 15 Maine soldiers still considered missing in action in Vietnam are read during a solemn ceremony held last week at the Houlton American Legion Post 47. Commander Ray Eastham lowered the POW/MIA flag to half-mast in protest of President Bill Clinton’s recent decision to lift the trade embargo on Vietnam.
Valentines royalty — King Jessie Smith and Queen Melissa Farrell at rear, along with Princess Ashley Foley and Prince Jeffrey Lenentine, made up the royal court for the annual Valentine social held recently at the Wellington School. The school’s Parent Teacher Club sponsored the event. which included games for the students and an auction for adults.
