Conference announces end-of-season award winners

The Big East Conference annual basketball awards have been announced and players from both Caribou and Presque Isle are prominent on the lists.

Caribou’s Parker Deprey made the Boys All-Conference First Team. He was joined by Connor Robertson of Orono, Isaac Varney of Hermon, Jackson Curtis of Ellsworth and Player of the Year Derek Collin of Mount Desert Island.

The Girls All-Conference First Team is comprised of Trinity Montigny of Ellsworth, Caitlin Tracy of Hermon, Maddy Candage of MDI, Hannah Richards of Old Town and Player of the Year Makenzie Beaudry of Foxcroft Academy.

Jonah Hudson of Presque Isle is on the boys’ Second Team, which also includes Jeremy Richard of Foxcroft Academy, Drew Shea of MDI, Cody Hawes of Hermon and Garrett Trask of Hermon.

Presque Isle’s Faith Sjoberg is part of the girls’ Second Team, along with Paige Plissey and Madi Curtis, both of Hermon; Julia Watras of MDI and Lacey Scanlon of John Bapst.

Boys making honorable mention were Alex Bouchard, Isaac Marker and Austin Findlen, all of Caribou; and Caleb Wheaton of Presque Isle. Hyatt Smith of Foxcroft also was recognized.

Presque Isle’s Maggie Castonguay received honorable mention for girls. Orono’s Lauren Melanson and Ellie Sockabasin, Old Town’s Lexi Thibodeau and MDI’s Hannah Chamberlain were others on the list.

Mark Reed of Hermon was named Boys Coach of the Year and Andy Pooler of Ellsworth picked up the girls honor. Hermon won the boys’ Sportsmanship Award and Washington Academy took the girls’ honor.

The Hermon boys and the MDI girls were the league’s team champions.

Each school selects its scholar-athlete, Paul Soucy Spirit Award and Defensive Player Award winners.

Cullin Caverhill and Alya Theriault are Caribou’s scholar-athletes, while Trace Cyr and Sydney Thompson took the honors for Presque Isle.

Caribou’s Iffy Sargent and Ashley Violette and Presque Isle’s Jason Dumais and Savannah Rodriguez captured the Paul Soucy Spirit Awards.

The Defensive Player Award went to Austin Findlen and Alexis Rodriguez for Caribou and Hudson and Madison Michaud for Presque Isle.

All the award winners will be recognized during the Big East Conference’s Senior All-Star Games on March 9 at Hermon High School. The girls’ game is at 3 p.m., followed by the boys’ contest at 5 p.m.

Caribou’s Alexis Rodriguez and Presque Isle’s Madison Michaud, Madison Jandreau and Molly Kingsbury will suit up for one of the girls’ teams, while the Wildcats’ Trace Cyr and Jonah Hudson and the Vikings’ Austin Findlen will compete for one of the boys’ squads, while the other team is coached by Caribou’s Kyle Corrigan.
