DYER BROOK, Maine — Jon Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School, has announced that Kassidy Mathers of Island Falls, a senior at the school, has been selected to receive the 2019 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
“Throughout her years here at Southern Aroostook, Kassidy has distinguished herself in the classroom and as a leader in the school and the community,” Porter noted in making the award. “Kassidy has been very active in many school and community-related activities that have accentuated her outstanding character and commitment to excellence.”
Mathers will graduate in June in the top 5 percent of her class. She has served as National Honor Society vice president and president for the Southern Aroostook High School chapter. She has attended Hoby Leadership, Dirigo Girls’ State, and Doc 4 a Day. She has also taken high school/college dual enrollment courses in grades 10, 11 and 12, and will graduate with 40-plus college credits.
Mathers has played varsity basketball for four years, helping her team win a state championship in 2018. She has earned All-State Honorable Mention, All-Tournament in Class D, All Aroostook, WHOU All Star, and was recently named a McDonald’s Senior All Star.
She has also played Varsity Soccer for three years and earned All Aroostook, All Northern Maine, Senior Bowl, and was named a Wendy Heisman State Finalist.
She has volunteered for the Special Olympics, SACS clothing drive, the SACS Food Pantry, MS Walk/Run, Crohn’s and Colitis fundraiser, Red Cross blood drive, and also volunteered at youth basketball and soccer clinics.
She is the daughter of Bill and Shannon Mathers of Island Falls.
Mathers, Porter, and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon in Brewer on Saturday, April 6, at 12:30 p.m. The luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler, both former Maine principals and executive directors of the association.
An additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
