100 Years Ago – Feb. 26, 1919
Making a move — G. Beecher Churchill and family will move to Houlton in June, so as to be near their work in the Temple Theater, the new picture house that is being fitted up there, says the Fort Fairfield Review.
Business trip — B. S. Green left Saturday night for New York City where he will look over the clothing market and buy his spring stock.
75 Years Ago – March 2, 1944
24th birthday — Robert Palmer, Houlton’s oldest citizen, celebrated his 24th birthday February 29 at his home, although he has lived 96 years. He received many gifts and cards from friends and family. Mr. Palmer is still enjoying the best of health with good eyesight and acute hearing.
Chosen to represent — Austin J. Freeley of Houlton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Freeley, has been chosen to represent Boston University in the National Discussion Contest on Inter-American Affairs sponsored by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs. Freeley is president of the Debating Society, which last year was Eastern Champion.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 26, 1969
Celebrates first anniversary — Employees of Dana’s Food Shop lined up outside of the Market Square restaurant and braved the cold weather and light snow yesterday morning for a photo to mark Dana’s first anniversary under new ownership. The restaurant was purchased a year ago by Ralph Cleale, who came to Houlton after a career as an industrial engineer in New Hampshire. With him for the photo were: Maxine Morris, Stanley Young, Joyce Carter, Bessie Sawyer, Pauline Campbell, Pearl Sennett, Bea Bates, Marie MacDonald, Leta Brown, John Sennett, Molly Brown, Rowena Dickinson, Frances Kirlin, Pat Malone, Judy Foster, Beverly Reece and Debbie Tomah.
Awarded wings — Miss Catherine Veronica Cummings, daughter of Mrs. Loretta Lyons, Island Falls, has been awarded the silver wings of an American Airlines stewardess and has now been assigned to flight duty out of New York City. Miss Cummings studied more than 100 different subjects during her six weeks training at American’s Stewardess College. Subjects ranged from make-up and grooming to in-flight food service and theory of flight.
25 Years Ago – March 2, 1994
Freak T-storm — An unseasonal thunderstorm briefly lit up the sky with lightning flashes last Wednesday evening during a day-long winter storm. Amidst snow and freezing rain, a booming thunderclap sounded just after 7:30 p.m., said Terry Larson, weather station supervisor at Houlton International Airport. Several lightning flashes also lit up the nighttime sky before the bizarre happening ceased just 15 mins. later.
Ready to roll — Rollerama owners Lisa LaPointe and Brian Doody are putting the finishing touches on the interior of their new North Road roller skating rink. They anticipate its grand opening in about three weeks.
