CARIBOU, Maine — The girls’ junior varsity basketball team at Caribou High School concluded its season with a winning record.
The squad, coached by Marc Weeks, went 10-9 during the regular season and finished 13-12 overall. The Vikings wrapped up their season at a round-robin tournament in Fort Fairfield Feb. 9, winning twice before losing in the finals to Presque Isle.
“I am very proud of this team,” Weeks said. “One thing that stood out to me from the very beginning was our lack of height, but the girls compensated for that disadvantage with their aggressiveness, effort and toughness.”
Caribou’s final regular season win came on Feb. 2 at the University of Maine at Orono’s Memorial Gymnasium against John Bapst. The Vikings pulled off a 55-28 victory as Renee Stubbs and Gabbie Sutherland scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the way. Maddy Zeigler added nine points and nine rebounds. Caribou made seven 3-point field goals in the contest in what Weeks called “the team’s best shooting game of the year.”
Team members included Stubbs, Sutherland, Zeigler, Mia Theriault, Abbie McNeal, Jessica Soucy, Paige Bassett, Morgan Fuller, Naomi Cote, Sierra Beaulieu, Paige Hale and managers Danika Labreck and Morgan Hewitt.
“Every player and manager on the roster contributed to making this team successful,” Weeks said. “This says a lot about the character, work ethic, camaraderie and effort these girls put into the season day in and day out.”
