115 Years Ago – Mar. 18, 1904
Ready to start — Goe. E. Young desires to announce that he is now ready to receive orders for spring work in painting and paper hanging.
Ice going out — One year ago last Saturday the ice in the Penobscot river went out, the date, March 12, being the earliest in the history of the opening dates of the river. The contrast between the conditions of 1903 and 1904 is marked as on Monday people were walking across between Bangor and Brewer and from all indications will continue to do so for several weeks longer.
100 Years Ago – Mar. 12, 1919
Business trip — Wm. O. Buzzell of the Houlton Furniture Co. has returned home from a business trip in Boston.
In town — H. C. Clewley of Boston, representing the Consolidated Rendering Co., is in town for a few days consulting with the various agents of his concern.
75 Years Ago – Mar. 16, 1944
Tractor schools for women — Women of Houlton and other towns of Aroostook are being offered an opportunity to learn to drive tractors through special schools being offered by the Extension Service, OSYA and vocational agricultural teachers. The purpose of these schools is to train women or girls over 14 years of age in tractor operation so that their services may help relieve the labor shortage during spring planting.
Attend conference — Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hatch returned Friday from Portland where Mr. Hatch attended a safety Conference for the supervisors of the New England Tel. and Tel. Co.
50 Years Ago – Mar. 12, 1969
90th birthday — ‘If you want it fixed, take it down to Lem.’ This was a saying for a number of years in this area and the Lem in question was Lemuel R. Ingraham, founder of the L.R. Ingraham and Sons Inc., automotive business, and a man who will be 90 years of age March 13. Mr. Ingraham who was born at Cherryfield, moved to Houlton at the age of 9 with his parents.
25th Anniversary — Mrs. Winslow Webber and Mrs. Helen Thorne were hostesses for the reception in the Shurtlief Hall of the Baptist Church honoring Mr. and Mrs. Donald Billings on their 25th anniversary. They were married March 8 of 1944 at Summerville N. B., by the Rev. Welsh Shaw.
25 Years Ago – Mar. 16, 1994
New sub shop — Leslie Ross, manager of North Street Callnan’s sandwich and pizza shop, cuts the ribbon signifying the official grand opening of the store. Present were: Kurt Bauersfeld, Retail Trade Board member; Town councilor Joyce Fitzpatrick; Kelley Ruth, assistant manager,; Ross, Marguerite Lawler, Chamber of Commerce president, and Nancy Ketch, chamber executive director.
New seed grower of the year — Frito-Lay, Inc., the nation’s leading marketer and manufacturer of snack chips, has selected Gerald Miller of Houlton, fo its National Quality Award as its 1993 national potato seed grower of the year. Gerald and Becky, together with his father Arnold and son Matthew, farm about 600 acres in Littleton. They have been a Frito-Lay supplier since 1990, providing the company with quality seed production for the U.S. and Canada.
