CARIBOU, Maine — A winter weather advisory is in effect for northern Maine for Friday into Saturday, according to the National Weather Advisory in Caribou.

Parts of Aroostook County, particularly in the St. John Valley are expected to see between 6 inches and 10 inches of snow, Tim Duda, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Caribou, said Friday morning.

The snow mainly will fall across the higher elevations, particularly Fort Kent and Madawaka, he said.

Parts of Aroostook already have recorded around 150 inches of snow since October and there is still about 36 inches on the ground now.

The latest advisory for northwest Aroostook and most of Piscataquis counties is in effect through 8 a.m. Saturday. It indicates an anticipated mix of precipitation with snow changing over to rain late in the afternoon, with 3 to 6 inches expected before the change-over in the early hours of Saturday. Rain then will change back to snow with an additional 3 to 4  inches through Saturday morning.

The advisory warns drivers to be cautious as slick roads and blowing snow will make travel difficult.

The rest of the state is expected to see rain or light amounts of snow.
