115 Years Ago – Apr. 8, 1904
New building — Mr. John G. Chadwick, contractor, who is erecting the new Carnegie building for the new Cary Library, is making steady progress with the work. The marble tile floor has been laid in the entrance and the carpenters are now busily at work putting on the interior finish. At the end of each reading room is a large open fireplace which gives to the room a very homelike and attractive appearance. The floors in the stack-room and reading rooms will be of maple. The walls and ceiling are being tinted in water colors and harmonize with the interior finish. When the building is completed it will be a gem and one of which our townspeople may be proud and a credit to the builder, Mr. Chadwick.
100 Years Ago – Apr. 2, 1919
New position — H. E. Kimball of Franklin Street has accepted a position with Almon H. Fogg Co.
Full house — The Snell House was taxed to its capacity on Thursday last, while the U.C.T. members were in town, every room in the house being taken.
75 Years Ago – Apr. 6, 1944
Business changes hands — The retail grocery store of Grant and Daigle, Upper Military Street, which was established by Ted Grant and Phil Daigle and which has been operated continuously by them for the past 18 years, this week changed hands when it was purchased by Roland and John Way. Beginning Monday morning it will be operated as Way’s Market.
50 Years Ago – Apr. 2, 1969
Busy first two months — On Feb. 1 of this year, the Town of Houlton initiated an Area Ambulance Service to replace the service which was discontinued by the Dunn Funeral Home. This new service has now been in operation for a period of two months and during this time has responded to 48 calls, including 11 emergency calls, and 33 of these calls were for the town of Houlton. In responding to these calls, the Ambulance Service has traveled a total of 486 miles.
Queen candidates — Candidates for queen of the annual Houlton High School Circus have been announced by the respective classes. They are: Miss Cathy Osborne, junior; Miss Janet Lynds, freshman, Miss Jane McGillicuddy, senior; and MIss Wendy Walton, sophomore. This circus will take place May 9 and preparations are already underway to assure the success of past years.
25 Years Ago – Apr. 13, 1994
Reaching skyward — Houlton Fire Department officials displayed their new $400,000 Smeale aerial ladder truck, which arrived in town Monday afternoon. The purchasing funds were appropriated through a bond issue approved by local voters two years ago. The truck boasts a 105-foot ladder unit.
New business — Melissa Walker, owner of ‘A Different Look,’ stood by as Tim Donovan, executive director of Northern Katahdin Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon during the salon’s grand opening.
