75 Years Ago – Apr. 13, 1944
Over the top — Over the top by 25 percent was the final word on the result of the Red Cross War Fund campaign following a practically complete tabulation of returns from all towns made public this morning. Citizens in the 28 towns in the area of the Southern Aroostook Chapter raised a total of $21,304.85, Chairman Fred L. Putnam reported, against their quota of $17,000. It was the most successful drive in history.
50 Years Ago – Apr. 9, 1969
Presents deed to Ricker — Victor Duplichen, who is associated with Thompson Buick-Pontiac Inc., presented to Charles Heath, vice president of fiscal affairs at Ricker College, the deed to a hunting camp and plot of land in Cary Plantation owned by him. Mr. Duplichen was employed by Ricker for a number of years following World War Two and wanted to show his appreciation to the institution of higher learning by presenting the college with this piece of property.
$100 winner — Ida H. Edwards of Island Falls showed off her $100 check she won in the Deck O Money game being conducted by the First National Store in Houlton. She became the third $100 winner at the Houlton store.
25 Years Ago – Apr. 13, 1994
Bring cheer — Students in the Black Bear group of the advisor-advisee program at Southside School created May baskets to bring cheer to patients in the long term care unit at Houlton Regional Hospital. Students presented the baskets to Kim Jenkins, activities director for long term care. Students who participated are: Katrina LeFay, Kim Jenkins, Ryan Sylvia, Eric Schools, Shasta Mooers, Hollie Barton, Jeffrey Carmichael, Leigh Cummings, Amber Howe and Tammy Fitzpatrick.
Congratulations — Paul Folsom has successfully completed training as a commercial truck driver. Gathered at the worksite were; Doug Lovely, owner of Lovely Enterprises, Ind., Folsom, David Fox, Region II SAVE commercial truck driving instructor and Mary Duff, ACAP Employment and Training counselor.
