LIMESTONE and ROCKLAND, Maine — Sarah Stackhouse, athletic director at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone, presented a session at the recent Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA) spring conference, held April 6 in Rockland.
The MIAAA is a state association with 140 athletic administration members. This year’s conference theme was “Steering the Leadership.”
“This is a great opportunity for professional development and also visibility for MSSM and our student athletes,” Stackhouse said.
At the conference, she led a roundtable style discussion for women in athletic administration titled, “Steerswomen: A Female Perspective at the Helm.” The session was a sounding board to provide support for women in these roles.
“It’s a perfect time to start these discussions. Currently in Maine, only 12 percent of the athletic directors are women, but that number increases every year,” Stackhouse said. “It can be intimidating to work in such a male-dominated field and I hope offering this session will be helpful to my female colleagues.”
Stackhouse presented with Sue Robbins, athletic director at Yarmouth High School. She said her goal for the conference, as well as into the future, is “seeing more females in leadership positions who can be role models for younger women and to offer support for women just entering the athletic administration field.”
Originally from Ludlow, she currently lives in Stockholm with her husband, Joshua. She attended Hodgdon High School and then earned a BS in environmental science with a minor in chemistry from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She participated in the National Student Exchange Program at Montana State University and studied soil and water science.
Stackhouse has been at MSSM since April of 2011 and is the director of student activities, athletics, and transportation.
