From the Bunkers — week of April 29, 2019

Oh boy, here we go. Looks like we’re finally turning the corner weatherwise. The forecast for this week is dry. All we need now is some consistently rising temperatures. The snow is gone and we just need to have the ground water dry up.

Brian and Joe have been busy with the initial cleaning of the greens and this week they will begin picking up winter debris. Paul has been working on getting the golf cars and machinery ready for the new season. I’ve had a discussion with a turf specialist at the course. He has looked at the greens and told me that they are doing fine. That is good news to me, and now I can see green blades of grass starting to show through the brown spots. Let’s hope that the sun will shine more this week.

The Golf for Life program is filling up. They will begin next week. Call Dave Grant at 538-8333 for more information or to sign up. This is an opportunity for anyone that has ever thought about playing golf to receive five lessons, use of golf clubs, and great deals on greens fees and membership.

The Lakeside Restaurant is now open on the weekends. On Friday and Saturday nights from 4-8 p.m. and Sunday brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Coming on Mother’s Day, May 12, Paul LaPointe will be entertaining the diners. Call Nancy at 694-9494 to make reservations.

The golf course will be open to the public on May 15. The grounds should be dry by then and we will keep you advised as to the use of power carts. Members may be out playing before then and I will suggest that they remember to fix their divots and especially the ball marks on the greens. The greens are already stressed from winter and early season marks take longer to heal. And if you haven’t paid your membership yet, now might be a good time to get ahead of the season.

Stop in on the weekend and talk to Bart. It won’t be long now and we will see you all out on the course.

Houlton Community Golf Course is located on 6 Country Club Drive in New Limerick. For more information on the course call 532-2662 or email houltongolf@gmail.com.
