CARIBOU, Maine — Five men who fought in World War II are going to be honored during a May 18 Memorial Day ceremony hosted at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou.
The event, scheduled to start at 2 p.m., is being organized by the Meo Bosse Detachment 1414 Marine Corps League. Craig Fay, chaplain of the local Marine Corps League as well as a Vietnam veteran, said the ceremony will be for the “last five World War II vets that we know of.”
“They’re in the veterans’ home on the residential side,” he said, explaining that while the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou is run by the state, it shares a campus with Cary Medical Center, which is operated by the city.
“We want to hold this ceremony at the veterans’ home and have a conference for them in the dining area,” Fay said. “We’re currently trying to get these guys some displays, like a flag with a nice casing and some names on it.”
“These guys are amazing,” Fay said of the WWII veterans. “Many of them are very articulate. We want to pay them some honor, and we’re going to get Wendell Hudson, who is very talented, to perform some music.”
The day is set to include punch, cookies, and a variety of refreshments for all in attendance.
“We’re currently trying to contact their loved ones and families to come and see them,” said Fay, adding that Veterans’ Home Activities Director Karen Page is working out the arrangements.
