PATTEN, Maine — Students who are members of the National Honor Societies from Southern Aroostook Community High School and Katahdin Middle-High School will fill barrels with flowers to line Main Street in each community beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 25.
The barrels and flowers are purchased for each town by local businesses and community members. The NHS students plant the flowers and place the barrels beneath the U S. flags that line the main streets in these two communities.
“Each year we have businesses, community organizations, and individuals who decide that they can no longer donate, for one reason or another, so we are always needing new people to donate,” explained Rae Bates, one of the event organizers. “It is our hope that the flower barrels enhance the appearance of the main street in each town.”
The consumers from Green Valley Association water the flowers daily during the week once they are placed on Main Street prior to Memorial Day. This work by GVA consumers has given them more of a presence in the communities, and provides them with an opportunity to engage with others as they water the flowers.
GVA is looking for volunteers who might be willing to also provide some watering services. Someone who works for a local business can call Jeff Hamm at 463-2156 to let him know if you and perhaps a co-worker might be available to water along Main Street.
People or businesses who wish to fill a barrel can send $39 to Green Valley Association. Donations can be sent to Green Valley Association, Attn: Jeff Hamm, P.O. Box 127, Island Falls, ME 04747.
