PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — After a recent stint of small-scale car burglaries, the Presque Isle Police Department is encouraging members of the public to protect items in their vehicles against potential theft.

Detective Chris Beck noted on Wednesday that the department has investigated several burglaries in the past eight to 10 days in which owners have lost small items such as GPS devices or loose change. Though no arrests have been made, Beck said police are investigating possible leads.

“This is the time of year when the weather has warmed up and criminals start going from car to car, trying to make a quick buck. In most cases the cars are unlocked,” Beck said. “Criminals aren’t as likely to smash a window because that causes attention.”

Police officers have seen the most theft activity thus far occur around Wilson Street. Beck encourages folks to always lock unoccupied vehicles and remove any items of high value such as purses, wallets, phones and other devices, or keep those items out of sight.

Anyone who has information about a potential theft should contact Presque Isle Police Department at (207) 764-4476.
