Spring rider alert: many ATV trails remain closed

AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — Although Memorial Day weekend typically heralds the start of trail riding for all-terrain vehicles and utility vehicles, many trails remain off limits due to the unusually wet spring.

According to Denise Geiger of the Aroostook Riders ATV Club in Houlton, most of the trails in southern Aroostook County remain closed until further notice. The one exception is that on Saturday, May 25, the railbed from Houlton to Easton will be opened for traffic.

However, riders may not use any trails to access the railbed.

“If you want to ride, you must trailer your wheeler to it,” she stated. “If anyone has questions, please private message us (on the group’s Facebook page) and we will try and get an answer for you.”

Bert Levesque of the Valley ATV Riders in Fort Kent, posted on his group’s Facebook page that the ATV Trails in the greater Fort Kent area will not open for Memorial  Day weekend. Instead, riders will have to wait until June 1 to access the trail system to allow more time for them to dry out from mud season and for some maintenance to be performed.
